Comboni Missionaries

More than 3,700 people, among priests, brothers, sisters
and catholics lay people, form the Comboni Missionaries group,
mens and womens dedicated to announcing the Gospel,
present today in 44 countries.

The Family started in 1867, through the missionary
Daniel Comboni (1831-1881), born in the small town of
Limone sul Garda (Brescia, Italy).
He got to know the peoples of Central Africa well;
he engaged in a determined struggle against the Slave Trade;
he set up centres for the education and training of Africans;
and he became the first bishop of Khartoum (Sudan).

Today, missionaries who follow Comboni are present in 44 countries.
In Africa, from the beginnings in Egypt and Sudan, they have spread in all directions, with a large presence in Uganda (being reduced as the local Church becomes increasingly self-sufficient) and significant numbers in Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Zaire, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa and in three countries of West Africa: Ghana, Togo and Benin.
In answer to the call of Pius XII for new forces in Latin America, the Comboni Family sent members to Brazil, Mexico, Ecuador and Peru.
