Resources on HIV/AIDS in Kenya

There are many resources on the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Kenya. Below we list (1) some of the sources on networks and organisations and (2) a few of the many books, periodicals and reports on the subject. The majority of these books and reports can be consulted at the Resource Center of the Kenya AIDS NGOs Consortium (KANCO).

HIV/AIDS networks and organisations Kenya AIDS NGOs Consortium (KANCO) is a network organization of some 450 NGO's and religious organizations involved in STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections) and HIV/AIDS prevention activities in Kenya. (See the article by Maureen Ong'ombe in this issue).

AIDS in Kenya: a directory of HIV/AIDS service organisations working in Kenya / compiled by Kenya AIDS NGOs Consortium. - Nairobi: KANCO, 1998. - 94 p. A very useful directory of some 500 organisations. Also includes a list of funding organisations, and an index by activities

Periodicals, books and reports Partner: the Newsletter of the Kenya AIDS NGOs Consortium, 1995- (Published quarterly)

AIDS in Kenya: background, projections, impact, interventions / edited by T. M. Okeyo ... [et al.]. - Prepared by National AIDS and STDs Control Programme. 4th ed. - Nairobi, NASCOP, 1998. - vii, 48 p. : ill. Gives current and future estimates of HIV prevalence as well as statistics on past and present deaths attributable to AIDS. Also discusses the social and economic impact of AIDS and answers a number of frequently asked questions.

AIDS in Kenya: the church's challenge and the lessons learned. Nairobi: MAP International, 1997.

This book contains the results of a nation-wide survey of sexual behaviour and HIV/AIDS prevalence, and gives information on prevention methods used in Kenya today.

AIDS: understanding the challenge / Raphael Tuju. Nairobi: ACE Communications, 1996. - 180 p. Incorporates information initially published in the AIDS Watch column of the East African Standard newspaper. A comprehensive study on all aspects of the epidemic. Written in a popular style. Includes a number of case studies.

The church and AIDS in Africa: a case study: Nairobi city / by Aylward Shorter and Edwin Onyancha. - Nairobi : Paulines Publications Africa. - 141 p. (See the book review on this title at the end of this issue.)

Focusing interventions among vulnerable groups for HIV infections: experiences from Eastern and Southern Africa / Network of AIDS Researchers of Eastern and Southern Africa. - vi, 124 p. - (NARESA monograph ; no. 2 ). Nairobi: NARESA, 1994.

Based on presentations of two regional workshops, one held in Nairobi in 1990, the other in Zimbabwe in 1993.

Discusses interventions among vulnerable groups, such as female sex workers, long distance truck drivers, and miners, as well as military and para-military groups. Deals with the underlying social problems which, for some these groups, is the cause of their susceptibility to HIV/AIDS. Also details the very good results obtained with the targeted interventions.

Questions and answers on AIDS: a handbook for adult readers and educators / Information Research and Communication Centre in conjunction with Marketing Support Services. Nairobi: Barclays Bank, 1997. - 69 p.

Barclays Bank has been recommended for having one of the best work place policies on HIV and AIDS in Kenya. This little book consists of 183 questions and answers divided into nine chapters dealing with the causes, the symptoms and the treatment of HIV/AIDS, among others.

Young women: silence, susceptibility and the HIV epidemic / Elizabeth Reid and Michael Bailey. - New York: UNDP, HIV and Development Programme, 1992. - 9 [12] p. - (Issues paper ; 12)

Explores the possible reasons why proportionately more girls and young women in their teens and early twenties are becoming infected than women in any other age group.
