Algeria

Algeria agreed to receive a European Union Ministerial Mission, British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said on February 15. This was mainly to hold up discussions to avert the present killings, where 1500 civilians have been slaughtered in recent massacres, starting from December 30 1997.

Cameroon

The International Press Institute (IPI) has condemned the prison sentence and heavy fine handed out to Mr Pius Njawe, editor in chief of Cameroon�s weekly, Le Messager, as reported on January 19. Mr Njawe, was arrested on December 24, two days after the publication of an article entitled "Is President Biya ill?" In the article, journalist Franck Essomba reported that President Paul Biya had suffered a heart attack during the Cameroon Cup Soccer finals.

Democratic Republic of Congo

The daily Le Soft reported on January 27 that General Kikunda Ombala, Tshiongo Tshi Binkula wa Tumba and Patrice Djamboleka who served as aides to the late Mobutu Sese Seko, have been provisionally freed. They have been accused of embezzling public funds.

Mali

Mali�s main opposition alliance staged a march through the capital, Bamako, on January 15 for a second day, saying the West African nations� political crisis should be resolved before municipal elections are held.

Mozambique

Three Mozambican opposition parties have announced the formation of a coalition to challenge the governing FRELIMO party, in the country�s first municipal elections, scheduled for May 29, according to local television news on January 20. The parties are the Mozambique United Front (FUMO), the Mozambique National Movement (MONAMO) and the National Convention Party (PCN)

Nigeria

More than 20 people have been killed and several injured in clashes between farmers and migrant herdsmen near Oyo town in Nigeria�s South-West Oyo State, press reports reported on January 19. The clash occurred when a nomad allegedly shot a farmer dead on January 9 after a heated argument in Anikinkin village near Oyo. Mr Chima Ubami, a leading Nigerian pro-democracy activist was released on bail after he was charged with incitement against military ruler Sani Abacha, the Independent Guardian reported on January 26.
