Friday, 4 June 1999 (8:02 p.m.) Dear Sabrina, I did have power but was caught up in a futile debate at the University about which you don't want to know :(( When I got back home I took a long nap and here I am now, so glad to hear from you again. Yes, I did get your mobile phone message -- I do think that I got the messaging service through my contact, meaning that I should be able to send out messages. Will check on that. In any case, should I need to inform you of something important, I will phone you! Alexandra wrote an email saying that she slept for about 12 hours, then woke up all drowsy. A maid came in with her breakfast! He, he. She was knocked off her feet. Says that Fernando is a real bohemian and that the family is very, very cute. The sight of the Andes is staggering, etc. I am so happy about her! Gotta do lots of things for my Mom now. You needn't call me tonight, and in case I have power I will write a more detailed account later or tomorrow. How's the preparation for your exam going? Love to you all, Djordje ----- 9:10 p.m. Thanks again, our guardian angel. Briefly: I am not sure that the Santiago place is a real palace, but is surely nice! Queneau used to be my favourite reading: the one and same event described in different registers. I read it in English, and in its Serbian version (translated wonderfully by the late Serbian writer Danilo Kis) -- what was the English title -- The Stylistic Exercises, or something similar. Then I read the other one, again the original title is rather hazy in my mind -- Zsa Zsa dans le Metro, or something similar? About my Italian writers: I read a lot of Moravia when I was in my late teens, Manzoni (the Bethroted??), Malaparte, Buzatti (spelling?? -- a strange and wondrous novel called The Fortress ??)... Not much I am afraid. Please send our love to your parents! Love, Djordje
