Wednesday, 9 June 1999 (5:29 p.m.) Dearest friends (Sabrina, Claudia, Bruno and Fabrizio), I finally got the permit from the Headquarters in Belgrade and now I can leave the country anytime! Great news. I was not able to enjoy the news the moment the Chancellor of the University called. However, the moment I saw it, and read the text, I almost cried out at the top of my lungs, but I didn't. I saved it for later, when I was at home!! He, he. Well, now I needn't worry about 'scaramanzia' any more, so Snezana and I will plan each little thing so as to have everything under control here and manage to leave my Mum and Zia cared for properly. There are also some University obligations for me: even a couple of exams that I will have to go through. Then, on Monday, June 14, we plan to go to Belgrade and get the visas and leave for Hungary on Tuesday, June 15. By then I will have all the info on the transit visas through Slovenia (whether I will need them there, etc). I can't cry out loud enough to tell you how happy we are!!! And when we see each other we'll tell you what the situation here is REALLY like as it takes some telling. Lots of telling actually as the news is not enough to relate all that is going on. And, our dearest friends, there are no words of gratitude that can express our love, respect and immense happiness at having you for friends!!! These terrible 70 odd days would not have been bearable without you... and this is not an exaggeration. Will write again -- haven't written before because the part of the city in which is my provider was without electric power. Love to you and one big thanks again!!! Djordje
