Ethiopia NGOs that make a difference
Action for Development(AFD)
Action for Development (AFD), an Ethiopian NGO, was constituted as an
indigenous organization in 1996.AFD began as the FAO-operated Freedom
from Hunger Campaign/Action for Development (FFHC/AD).FFHC/AD began
with the objective of channeling NGO assistance for rehabilitation in
selected rural areas after the 1984 drought. It operated as a
partnership among farmers' organizations, sectoral offices and bureaus,
northern NGOs and the FAO. FFHC/AD programs primarily involved
agricultural inputs and a revolving credit fund managed by farmers
cooperatives. It operated in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and
Peoples' and Oromia Regions of Ethiopia.
AFD continues this work in SNNPR and Oromia with plans to expand in those
regions.Primary beneficiaries are farmers and pastoralists, and rural
women and youth.AFD estimates that the most important benefits of its
programs are "enhanced stability of production, awareness of improved
land and farm management practices, improved access to resources and
services, and increased local capability to implement programmes aimed at
alleviating local problems."
An AFD profile states that in "partnership with the marginal segments of
the population in its area of operation AFD believes that it can make
useful contributions to the enhancement of initiatives for the attainment
of food security and improved livelihoods at the grassroots level."
