Cara Sabrina,

sono stanco, ma felice, adesso. Snezana è molto impegnata nel volontariato: raccolgono abiti vecchi e usati per tutta la città, da offrire ai poveri profughi. Ce ne sono più di 200.000 dal Kosovo, che vanno ad aggiungersi ai 600.000 della Croazia e della Bosnia, cioè circa un milione! Com'è l'economia, te lo puoi immaginare, intendo con le sanzioni che durano da sette anni.

Com'è la Serbia adesso? Divisa in diversi campi politici. Non ho voglia di entrare nei dettagli, perché mi arrabbio da morire anche solo a pensarci. Quello che importa, però, è che non c'è più benzina ai distributori, la si compra dai venditori ambulanti (!!) a circa 2000 lire al litro, che è decisamente eccessivo per il nostri salari e poi c'è carenza di olio alimentare e di zucchero. Ogni tanto va via la luce, quindi devo salutare subito il computer, quando il voltaggio cala all'improvviso. In generale, ci sono pochissimi soldi per qualsiasi cosa...

Per il resto, siamo felici!! Siamo insieme, il tempo è bello e siamo vicini ai nostri amici! Ascoltiamo buona musica, guardiamo dei bei film occidentali sulle TV locali e usciamo anche, la sera... Alexandra è andata a Belgrado oggi pomeriggio, per incontrare il suo ragazzo. Snezana ed io leggiamo molto ed io gioco a scacchi contro il computer. Usciamo spesso in bicicletta: come sai, non abbiamo più la macchina (non che ci manchi) ed io vado da mia madre una volta al giorno per vedere come sta e la faccio camminare un po' per l'appartamento, tre o quattro volte. Sembra che l'aiuti molto: in fondo, ha solo bisogno di un po' di affetto per sentirsi meglio. Sua sorella, mia zia, è molto più forte, anche se ha ottant'anni. Oggi mi ha preparato un piatto tradizionale molto buono, che si chiama kuvani kupus, che non è altro che cavolo lessato con delle spezie, con pancetta e pollo bolliti.

Ho dovuto acquistare un sistema di alimentazione elettrica ininterrotta per via dei black-out. E' stato costoso, ma ho dovuto prenderlo, per proteggere il mio computer. Tremiamo al solo pensiero che questa situazione permanga (o peggiori) durante l'inverno. Perciò pensiamo di prendere una stufa a gas, perché sembra che il gas sia più facile da trovare. Dovremo prenderne due, una per mia madre e mia zia ed una per noi. Una bombola può durare circa dieci giorni, quindi dovremmo avere abbastanza calore per i giorni più freddi...

A causa dell'aggressione aerea, tutte le scuole e le università sono rimaste chiuse a lungo e non ci saranno esami di ammissione! Quindi, adesso abbiamo una situazione molto problematica, in cui ci sono fiumi di studenti che si iscrivono, senza neanche fare il test d'ingresso! La folla, all'Università, è enorme, e il rumore e il disordine sono molto seccanti. Ci sono anche delle sessioni d'esame straordinarie (una in settembre e una in ottobre)...

Dear Sabrina,

I am all beat up, but happy now :))) Snezana is doing her charity work -- they are collecting old and worn clothes from people all over to offer to the poor refugees. There are more than 200,000 from Kosovo now and coupled with more than 600,000 from Croatia and Bosnia, that is close to a million! You can imagine what the economy is like, what with the sanctions lasting for the past seven years....

What is Serbia like now? Split up into several political camps. I am not going to go into all this as I get really mad merely thinking about it. However, what matters is that there is no petrol at petrol stations -- you can buy it from street vendors (!!) at about 2,000 lire per litre which is way too much for our salaries, there is a shortage of cooking oil and sugar. There are brownouts occasionally, meaning that I must be wary about my computer when the voltage drops suddenly! Generally speaking, there is very little money for anything and everything...

Otherwise, we are happy!! We are together, the weather is fine, our friends are close by! We are listening to good music, watching nice Western films on the local TVs, even going out at night... Alexandra went to Belgrade this afternoon to see her boyfriend. Both Snezana and I are reading a lot and I play chess against my computer.

We both ride our bikes a lot -- remember, we don't have a car now (nor do we miss it a lot)! I go to my mother's once a day to see how she is and walk her around the flat three or four times. That seems to help a lot as she needs care only to feel better. Her sister, my Zia, is much stronger even though she is eighty. She prepared a very nice national dish for me today -- called kuvani kupus, which is actually cabbage with some herbs, boiled bacon and chicken meat.

I had to buy a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) because of the brownouts we are having. It was expensive but I simply had to protect my computer. We are shuddering at the thought of the same (and worse) situations during the oncoming winter. Thus, we are planning on getting a gas stove, as gas seems easier to find. We have to get two, one for my mother and Zia and one for us. One gas container can go for about ten days or so, and this way we'll have enough heat for the really cold days...

Due to the aerial aggression all the schools and universities were shut down, meaning that there were no entrance exams! So, now we are having a very nasty situation in which there are hosts of students who had to be enrolled, without even having taken the entrance tests! The crowds at the University are enormous and the clamour and the noise very unpleasant. There are also additional exam terms (one in September and one in October)...
